GOHYAKU RAKAN
五百羅漢
The Tohoku area experienced a great famine around 200 years ago, and the people in the Tono area were particularly affected. It is said that the head priest of the Daiji-ji Temple carved the image of 500 of those souls that had reached Nirvana as spiritual nourishment for the many who lost their lives in the famine.
