Stone Buddhist images to comfort people's souls
gohyakurakan
More than 220 years ago, thousands of people died as a result of successive crop failures. To pacify the sprits of the victims, a Buddhist priest from the nearby Daijiji Temple carved reliefs of 500 rakans(disciples of Buddha) on natural rocks in the area. Some 380 stone images still remain today, covered with moss that has spread with the passage of time.
